Are you working? Then have you been working for money? Have you for a while asked yourself, ‘’what has my salary done for me?’’ If you are planning to get a job; are you planning to go there and start working for money? Have you really asked yourself, what is my reason for getting a job? Is it just because you are qualified for the job due to your certificates? Do you just need this job because you just need this money? Are you going there for a change? Have planned on what to achieve with this money and the lives you are going to affect with your talent?
Let’s continue as we have a renewal of our mindset at stopthejobsearch.
A scenario we want to avoid
After graduating with the best result in your area of study. Of course, you are the hot-cake in the industry; and eventually, you get a job of your choice in the oil industry with good salary, official car, nice apartment and all enticing things.
Now, you have a good life to live. So, you decided to enjoy your life with lots of women and men around you. You became the talk about in all the night clubs and all the popular joints in town. You are the man/woman of the moment. Of course, you have this cash to flaunt; NO BIG DEAL! Anybody that knows you smiles to the bank. All the people around you (uncles, nieces, aunts, etc) are well taken care of, as a result of your generosity, which in turn do not channel the money into a right source. You see yourself sponsoring one party or the other. You even have a special title in your village.
After like ten years, you decided to settle down, get married, but before this time, you already have two/three kids from different mothers or fathers as the case may be. After marriage, you still continue with your old life of going to beer parlours, pepper soup joints, clubs; of course, money is not a problem to you. You receive promotions and more incentives that amount to big financial increase. In all these it never occurred to you that you need to make some savings and plan for your future. Now, you have more responsibilities of paying school fees, more feeding allowance, this did not even deter you from living as you pleased, because money is still flowing in as usual.
After working for more ten years, things began to unfold, there are changes in everything, in your job, at home, in your industry, more competition, job insecurity, just name it. CHANGE is the only thing that is constant in life. Whether you want it or not, it must happen. It is either you are prepared and flow with the current of change, or you become a victim and get drowned in the current of change. Permit me to use those words, but that is the truth. I know you do not want your case to be this way that is why you are still reading this article.
In the above paragraph, we made mention about change, yes the body can never resist change also, as the body responds to change in age. You’ll begin to notice that all the things you used to do cannot be done as you used to due to lack of strength. Therefore, retirement age is at the corner, knocking hardly at your door. Your employer is just managing to keep you on the job. Hence, promotion is out of the way. Now it’s dawn on you that CHANGE is inevitable and you cannot turn back the hands of time. It is just like you’ve been dreaming. Now you are up, ready to face the reality which is very painful.
One night, you were in a dream where you were able to calculate all the money you had been paid, all along as salary; you discovered that this was the money you had been making as a worker all your life. It was a treasure in a golden box and it was worth billions.
Imagine the excitement in your face glittered as you tried to reach out for the treasure for taking. As you approached, you saw some engraved words that stated: ‘’this treasure will last till your second generation keep it well”. As you reached out to grab it, you woke up. Bang! It was a dream. You realised that you are back to face painful future without a back-up. All treasure was embedded in a wasted past. What a dilemma! Will I ever be able to buy back the time? You are thinking hard now. Suddenly, your kids stormed the room where you are lying in bed. “Daddy or mummy we are hungry!” they exclaimed.
I KNOW THIS IS NOT YOU, SORRY FOR USING ‘YOU’ IN THIS ARTICLE. IT CAN NEVER BE YOU.
Hmmm! Is this the dilemma of a worker? Where lies the future when today is kept very well and the future is allowed to take care of itself like a field cleared for planting only to be left alone without care with the owners expecting a great harvest. INVESTMENT is the only seed that can secure a lasting financial future if you commit yourself to it.
Now, let us do some analysis below on how some people do invest.
Almost every day you go to work, working for money; have you ever one day asked yourself,” what has my salary really done for me?”
You buy fuel to fill your tank or pay for transportation in commercial bus, which they(drivers) use to buy fuel, making Total’s, Oando’s, AP’s, MRS’s and Mobil’s investors richer.
How about your car insurance? You are a source of income to insurance companies without thinking of how to tap into the opportunities there.
You also make banks and their investors rich with your salary which you collect through them or even have some kinds of account with them; while the investors having shares with them smile to the bank as a result of your money. You only work hard for the money without investing, making you to be like monkey, while the investors baboon (a case of monkey dey work baboon dey chop). That is because baboon takes time to invest in knowledge, knowing when the monkey has finished dissipating energy working and retiring with nothing.
You buy drugs, eat food, take beverages, drink milk and soft drinks making the companies quoted in the stock exchange and their investors rich season-in and season-out. Such companies as UTC, UAC, Mr Biggs, Unilever, Nestle, Cadbury, etc, and their investors are getting richer from the money you are working hard for. What a life of work – working for others to enjoy!
When will you be liberated from this slavery? Don’t think of it! It is even worse when you retire, get fired or forced to retire.
Your liberation can only make sense when your income is coming, no matter how small and you start an investment portfolio. Most guys prefer starting when they’ve retired and think they will then have the time. How can you manage money when you never did trial and error when you had the capacity to take risk and make mistakes in active service?
Watch out for part 2 of this article to know "how to multiply your salary"
To your success!
